As a military vet, I want to share my story to encourage others who are like me. I started coming to Embry Rucker Community Shelter in 2004. I would come to shower, receive medical care, and eat a meal here and there, but refused their offer to stay at the shelter. When my health kept getting worse, I finally decided it was time to accept their help. The staff at the shelter helped me receive disability benefits and to secure a housing voucher, which I put towards renting a one bedroom apartment. Because I accepted their help, for the first time in years, I get to experience one of life's simple pleasures - my own mattress.
