Your contribution provides access to “wrap-around” support services, to prevent our community members from becoming homeless when a crisis emerges.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Patricia was unable to continue working due to cancer treatments and felt the immediate effect of her illness and the needed treatments on her livelihood. A once stable household began to falter as she lost her job and with it her ability to provide for her family. Cornerstones assigned Patricia a personal Care Manager to help address her immediate needs and to plan for the many challenges created by her treatments and loss of income.
Her Care Manager helped Patricia reduce her rent and replace her income, giving her the ability to manage expenses until she fully recovered and was able to return to work.
Through Cornerstones and our Connections for Hope Partnership program resources, her care manager was also able to help her obtain a monthly gift card for basic expenses, apply for SNAP benefits for a monthly food stipend, access to Cornerstones food pantry as well as local clothing closets, and get transportation to and from her medical appointments.
A single crisis has the potential to upend families who are often on the brink of poverty.
Family emergencies, health crises and other unexpected events often lead to housing instability. In order to prevent homelessness, case management, financial education, employment and educational resources are provided to help people stay in the homes or to stabilize in their new homes after a recent experience of homelessness.
